A Day As a 'Dog-sitter'

I helped a friend to look after her dog, Charlie while she attended a course. Charlie is a friendly, clever and active jack russell. The problem was my flat is mostly carpeted and the only non-carpeted area are my small kitchen and bathroom. So in order to let him out, I had to put him in the toilet and played with him. He shed quite a lot of fur. I had his fur all over my coat when I brought him out to pee and poo. He was too active and it was difficult to hold onto him with the lead. Anyway, it was really a wonderful experience to be a day 'dog-sitter'.

These are the few latest addition to my knitting projects. The bunny is requested by my friend. I still need to knit a graduation gown to go with it. The big fat soft brown bear doesn't have any shirt or pants to wear yet. Lastly, the two colourful bears, one was given away as a gift and the other one, I keep it for myself :)

In Loving Memory of My Dog, Oreo

My dog, Oreo was knocked down by an unknown vehicle this morning. It was a hit and run accident. He had been with us for 5 years. He was a big, energetic, hyperactive dog who loved to run about pouncing at people. He was very fierce too. One of his favourite hobbies was chasing after mice. You can refer to my previous post about him catching a mouse. Another hobby of his was chewing metal of his kennel. He will be deeply missed. May his soul rest in peace.

Happy Chinese New Year to you all!
I would like to share my CNY here in the UK.

This is my first time experiencing the parade and CNY festival here. The day of celebration falls on a Sunday, understandably as it's not a public holiday on the actual day of CNY here. I was quite surprised with the flock of crowd that turned out for the event.

There was lion dance, dragon dance and even unicorn dance. Each paid a visit to the individual shops and restaurants in china town. With each visit, there was loud firecracker blasting in the atmosphere.

When I mention festival, it is a proper festive celebration with stalls selling food and souvenirs. There's even games and rides set up around China town.

After the celebration, the restaurants and shops were jam packed with people. Instead of squeezing ourselves in the restaurant, my DH and I decided to go back to enjoy homecooked food :)

My birthday celebration

I had a nice dinner at an Italian restaurant called Il forno. I like their pasta. I had pasta with clams while DH had it with lobster. They are famous for their pizza but we didn't get to try it out that day. The starters were as good. We had scallops and squids. Come to the desserts, we were very full already but we managed to finish all. We will definitely come back to this restaurant to try out their pizza and other dishes too.

New clothes for my teddy bear

I made these two outfits for my 30cm teddy bear. It is tired to knit but once you see the outcome then you will feel worth it altho it may not be perfect :) Here, I would like to introduce my new teddy bear, which added to my knitted toy collection. My toys are yet to be named. I have a request to make a graduation bear. I'm still figuring out how to knit the graduation gown. Hopefully I can get it done.

Serimuka/ Steamed egg custard with glutinous rice

I made this two days ago as I was craving for kuih-muih. I miss kuih-muih back home. I tried to make this before but I couldn't get the top to set but this time I managed to get it done although the top still looked wrinkly. I obtained the recipe from mykitchen. It is nice and not too eggy like some other recipes.

I managed to get the pants done. But it is kind of big for my teddy bear. I should have stuffed more into its stomach ;) Someone commented that the bunny on the sweater looks like an old bunny because of the wrinkly whiskers.. haha.. better take them off.

My knitted teddy bear

I started to make this teddy bear before x'mas and just managed to get it done few days ago. The teddy bear is naked so i thought maybe it would be a good idea to dress him up. So here comes the bunny sweater for my teddy bear. I made a red sweater because red means good luck and cny is just around the corner. Meanwhile, the bunny indicates the year of rabbit 2011. I like the cute pom pom tail. I'm trying to figure out the pant for the teddy bear. Hope I can get it done ;)

In this cold and wet weather we headed to the zoo today. We didn't expect that it would rain as the forecast didn't predict so. We reached there quite early around 10.30 a.m. The first place we visited was monkey island. The monkeys are supposed to be outside in the open air but because of the weather they are kept in the cages. Let's me share some photos and interesting facts about the monkeys.

Our simple Christmas dinner.. nice chilli con carne (cooked by my DH), roasted potatoes, baked chicken with glutinous rice, baked chicken wings and some tuna vege salad. It was my first time trying out the baked chicken with glutinous rice. We thought of roasting a turkey but we ended up with a chicken instead. Turkey needs to roast for quite long and also we don't really like its taste and texture.

Braised pork with kompia

I made this yesterday out of the blue. I obtained the recipe of braised pork from My Wok Life. I didn't use the pork belly as it is fatty. Pork fillet was used instead. The braised pork turned out to be quite nice. You can give it a try. And for the kompia, I used the bagel recipe and shaped them like kompia (tho they still didn't look alike.. hehe..). Overall, it was a good try.

My first time baking a birthday cake was a year ago and it turned out to be err... messy. My second attempt was a month ago... hmm.. maybe there was some minor improvement in decoration.. haha.. and the texture not too bad. (Hint hint... My DH likes it ;)) But again, nothing compared to the store bought cake. I will try to improve again next time but maybe with some proper tools.

It is almost 12 a.m. and I'm thinking of food here.. I want ba gui (flat noodles.. don't really know what it is called in english).

Ya.. latch hook. This is my first time trying it. I thought it will be difficult but actually it is easy. Even a young kid can do it. Just that it needs some patience to complete everything and also it is quite expensive, but I got a good deal from eBay.

Home-cooked food... The first two dishes were cooked by my DH - lor mee and tang hoon soup. Tempting?? ;) I attempted to recreate the bien nuk soup so that it tastes similar to what we have back home. But there is still something missing from the soup. It was yellowish in the picture due to the lighting. I tried out the lemon chicken recipe from sunflower the other day. It turned out very nice. My DH asking for more.. ;)

Beggar's Chicken

This is called beggar's chicken. I tried it once when i was in KL but forgot how it tasted like. I found this recipe from baking mum and was very keen to try it out. The end result was quite nice and the meat was tender and fell apart from the bones itself. Me and my dh finished the whole chicken. The most important thing was to wrap the chicken properly to keep the lovely juice. The juice was very nice and sweet.

My friend saw lots of dumplings at London chinatown and was so tempted to try some. She grabbed two dumplings, one for her and another for her hubby. When it was time to pay, she was shocked. £4 each?? She bought one instead and shared it with her dearest. That's lovely.. ;) I miss my mum's dumplings. What I have to do is to make some myself. So yesterday I did make some but they turned out to be small dumplings because the leaves were thin and slim or maybe I still need to learn more about the wrapping skills. Anyway, as long as they are edible... :)

Blackfriars Spring Market

Blackfriars Spring Market was held last saturday at the churh hall. It is an annual event to raise fund for the church. My friend and I set up an asian food stall. She prepared fried rice and jellies while I prepared cakes and noodles. We went to church early to prepare and cook our dishes. There were some other stalls too, selling other miscellaneous things such as cards, toys and books. There were also raffles and DH won a packet of shortbread. We enjoyed ourselves very much although we didn't sell all the food.

Wonderful Scenery on a Beautiful Day

We went to the Heights of Abraham at Matlock Bath last Saturday and it was really great. We started our journey with a spectacular cable car ride to the hill top. The scenery was magnificient from top. There were two caverns which once were rich with minerals. It was cold inside the caverns. Can you imagine how the miners used to collect the mineral with just one single candle lighted up in the dark cave? Apart from Abraham Height, there were some other places to be explored too such as lovers' walk, high tor, pic tor and some gardens. Due to time limit we could only explore lovers' walk and one of the gardens.

After we came down from the top, we went for dinner at a local pub restaurant. The food was... hmmm.... not too bad... ;) Allthough it was a long walk ,it was really worth it. Here are some photos to share..

Ohya, not forgetting the ice-cream, it was really yummyyy... :)

Okonomiyaki

My own creation of okonomiyaki... The real okonomiyaki should be something like the photos which I uploaded on my previous blog @ a day trip to London. The batter is just like the way we make the basic pancake by replacing milk with chicken broth and add any ingredients that you prefer (salmon, chicken, carrots, cucumber, etc.) and top it with mayonaise and okonomiyaki sauce( I used oyster sauce + kicap manis + hp sauce). My DH is my loyal guinea pig to taste every dishes that I cook ;p

I never thought that I would find this type of rice cake here, at the place where I stay at the moment. It was kind of suprise when I saw it in one of the oriental supermarkets. Without much hesitation, I just grabbed a packet. But, alas, I found out that it was made in china when i reached home. I thought it was supposed to be made in Korea. Anyway, I still go ahead to cook TteokBokki. It turned out quite nice. The rice cake was chewy and yummy. A bit like chinese rice cake. But to tell you the truth I haven't really try the real TteokBokki before so I can't really comment much.

I cooked this nasi lemak sometimes ago. I forgot where I got the recipes from. The tedious parts were cooking the rendang and the sambal. I omitted the belacan for the sambal because I didn't have any and at the same time I didn't want my whole flat to smell like 'belacan in the air'. It was a good try.

Bread and buns

I'm really satisfied with these bread and buns. They were really soft and fluffy. They stay soft the next day without any artificial ingredients to make them stay soft and also without the need of reheating them. This method of making the bread is called 65 degree tang zhong bread @ water roux bread. Recipes adapted from here and here. Try it and you will know. :)

Jjajangmyun - Korean black bean noodles

Jjajangmyun in making. I adapted it from maangchi. I used udon instead because I couldn't find the special noodles for jjjajangmyun. Anyway, it tasted great. I read from somewhere that we can also use spaghetti or even rice to go with this yummy sauce.

A day trip to London

We went to London last weekend to visit our friends. It was a wonderful trip altho just a short one. We managed to visit the Europe's largest mall, Westfield. It was kind of early when we reached there. Not many people were there or maybe because the mall is very big. We had our lunch at the nearby malaysian restaurant, Jom Makan. I had nasi lemak while my Dh had nasi goreng kampung. My verdict... The food was not so authentic. Still lacking of the flavours that suit our taste buds. After lunch, we went to my friend's new apartment and have a rest there.

After that, we headed to Patisserie Valerie for our tea time. We tried out four different types of cakes and also ordered a plate of egg benedict. The shop was packed with people and we had to wait for around 20 minutes to get a seat there. The cakes were really very nice, soft and fluffy. Next, we walked around china town and guess what we found out.... 3 in 1 Milo and big tin of Milo from Singapore. Let us don't talk about the price ;) I was looking for Korean black bean sauce to cook jjajangmyun. I lost count of the number of oriental shops that I went in to search for it. But at last I did find one but not the brand that I wanted to get. Anyway, I just bought one to try out.

What's for dinner?? We had chicken soba and okonomiyaki for dinner at Abeno, a Japanese restaurant somewhere near china town. The food was great but had to stand and wait for around 20 minutes for our turn. Anyway, it was worth waiting. And, it was time for us to go back home.

Yam Cake

This was my first attempt of making yam cake and it turned out really yammy... We finished the whole cake in one day. It is an all-time favourite kuih for breakfast and tea time. I made a slight changes from the original recipe. I added minced chicken and dried shrimps into the yam cake with no garnishing.

Ingredients:

(A)

250g yam, diced and coat with 1 tsp of five spice powder

240ml water

40g dried shrimps, minced

100g minced chicken

(B) Mix together and sieve:

125g rice flour

20g tapioca flour

240ml water

150g yam, sliced thinly, steam and mashed

(C) Seasoning:

1 tbsp chicken stock

2 tsp soya sauce

1 tsp sesame oil

1 tsp sugar

salt and pepper to taste

Method:

(1) Heat 2 tbsp oil and stir fry the dried shrimps and minced chicken. Remove and set aside.

(2) Add 2 tbsp oil to the remaining oil in the wok, add diced yam and stir fry well. Mix in water and bring to a boil.

(3) Add in (B) and seasoning and cook till batter is fairly thick. Then add in (1) and mix well.

(4) Pour thick batter into a well-greased 25cm round tray.

(5) Steam till kuih is set and cooked through (about 45 mins). Leave aside to cool. Serve yam cake with chilli sauce.

Beef Noodle (Niu Rou Mien)

I made this beef noodles for dinner last night. I obtained the recipe here. There was no chinese chilli bean paste in my pantry so I omitted it. In order to make the soup spicy, I added some sambal oelek and chilli powder. Besides that, I also added some homemade chicken meatballs which were made a day before. I got the recipe from here. I added some spring onions and carrot to the paste. The chicken balls didn't really look round in shape (need more practice) but they were really nice. Should give it a try.

There was still some ummph... missing in the beef broth but the meat tasted nice. Overall, it satisfied my grumbling tummy. Maybe I will try to use some chinese chilli bean paste next time and see if it will turn out to be nicer. And also, the beef will taste nicer and tastier if we cook it a day before.

...a loaf of bread.. This was my first attempt of making bread. I didn't use bread flour so I think that was one of the reasons why it turned out to be like this. Although the top looked very brownish but it was not hard. I brushed it with some butter. I read from a website that if we brush the top with egg then it will yield hard crust. I prefer it to be soft so I brushed it with butter instead. Here is some tips of making bread. The bread texture was quite good altho I used plain flour. It was soft and fluffy. I got the recipe from happy home baking. I added some pandan essence and pandan kaya to make it looked and tasted like pandan bread. I don't have a bread machine so this was made with my bare hands. It was a good try. More to go :)

Chap Goh Mei

It was my first time celebrating Chap Goh Mei here. We usually have a gathering among family and relatives on this special night while enjoying nice dinner at a restaurant back at home. Since I'm away from home, following my DH, we just had a simple dinner together - fried noodles (wet chao mein) and dak bulgogi (Korean BBQ chicken). He was working yesterday so we only managed to celebrate it at around 9pm. It is actually not really healthy having dinner late at night but yesterday was exceptional for us ;)

Chicken bulgogi is adapted from Closet Cooking. I just pan fried the marinated chicken with a bit of oil and some of the marinade. You have to make sure that the pan is not too hot as the meat will get burn easily. The meat cooks very quickly cause it is sliced thinly and the sugar content will cause some browning. You may also adjust the soy sauce and red pepper sauce (gochujang) to your liking. If you don't like it to be too salty then reduce the soy sauce. If you don't like to be too spicy then reduce the gochujang sauce. Garnish the chicken with some toasted sesame, spring onion and some chopped chilli and voila...

Ichigo Daifuku (Strawberry Mochi)

What's for dessert? Yea... daifuku. I made it for the first time and it was good. Daifuku or mochi is a traditional Japanese cake with different kind of filling - red bean, peanut butter, nutella, etc. Putting a whole strawberry inside a daifuku with some red bean is new to me and find it quite interesting. I got the recipe from here and video clip.

My daifuku didn't turn out to be perfect like the video clip but they were chewy and nice. It will be much better with smaller strawberries. The strawberries that I bought were kind of big so I had big daifuku. The recipe can make 6 pieces but I can only make 4 pieces. Another problem that I had was the wrapping skill. I need more practice on that.

Berry Smoothies

I had a packet of tofu that had been sitting in the fridge for sometimes. It will expire in one or two days time. So I went online to surf for a nice tofu recipe. I came across a recipe for smoothies that uses silken tofu. I found it interesting and at the same time feeling weird using tofu as one of the ingredients. But I still eagered to try it out. To my suprise, it turned out to be a very yummy glass of smoothies. I found the recipe from here.

Ingredients:

6 oz of silken tofu (drain it to remove excess water)

1 medium banana (peel, slice and freeze it before use)

2/3 cup of soy milk (I used instant soy mix)

1 cup fresh/frozen blueberries (I used frozen mixed berries)

1 tbsp of honey (to taste)

2-3 ice cubes, optional (I added more)

Method:

Blend the banana, tofu and soy milk for 30 seconds. Add 1/2 cup of the frozen blueberries and process until smooth. Add the remaining blueberries, honey and ice cubes if using and process again until smooth. (I blended everything together)

Enjoying a glass of smoothie with a plate of spaghetti.

Bibimpap

I came across this website, maangchi which introduced lots of nice korean dishes. The bibimbap recipe caught my eyes. I was so eager to try it out. So yesterday I went to shop for the ingredients and tried it out today. It turned out quite nice. I guess the main ingredient is the sauce - Gochujang (hot pepper sauce). Without the hot stone bowl, I can still enjoy a nice bowl of bibimpap.

You can refer to the website above for the recipe or the following (with slight changes)
Part 1:
Marinate 200g minced beef with some minced garlic, soy sauce, sugar, black pepper, big onion and sesame oil for at least 30 mins. Heat the wok, add some oil and cook the meat. Add some roasted sesame seeds.

Part 2:
Cook the sushi rice in the rice cooker.

Part 3:
(A) Bean sprouts - Rinse them with water for 3 times. After that, put some water and boiled them for 5 minutes. Drain the water and mix with some minced garlic, sesame oil and a pinch of salt. Set aside.
(B) Spinach - Put spinach in boiling water and stir for a minutes. Then, rinse it with cold water and squeezed lightly to remove excess water. Mix it with a pinch of salt, some soy sauce, minced garlic and sesame oil. Set aside.
(C) Shiitake Mushrooms - Soaked and slice the mushrooms. Saute mushrooms with soy sauce and sugar. Set aside.
(D) Cucumbers - Julienne and season cucumbers with some salt, rice vinegar and sugar. Set aside.
(E) Carrots - Julienne and saute carrots for a minute and add a pinch of salt. Set aside.
(F) Egg - Prepare the egg with sunny-side up (telur mata kerbau).

Arrange them and serve it with sesame oil and Gochujang sauce. Lastly, mix it up and enjoy a nice bowl of bibimpap.

For the sauce, you can also mix gochujang with some rice vinegar, a bit of soy sauce, sugar, minced garlic and sesame oil.

After dinner, we had a glass of red bean milkshake topped with some cream and cocoa powder. Just add red bean puree with some semi-skimmed milk. Slurp...

Bien Nuk Mien (Kampua)

I still have some dried kampua noodles that I brought all the way from my hometown. Kampua is one of my hometown's signature dishes. Kind of missing it last night so here came the kampua with some bien nuk (foochow dumplings) that mimicked the delicious flavour found in Sibu :p. I used the wonton wrappers that I bought from the chinese shop to make some bien nuk. They are just dumplings wrapped with some seasoned pork. The right combination satisfied our craving.. yumm...

(Note: Fresh kampua noodles taste much nicer)

Dian Bien Ngu and Char Siew Rice

I made this dian bian ngu last week from the recipe I found from A Daily Obsessions. I used shredded chicken instead of minced/sliced pork. I had a problem of preventing the rice flour batter from getting into the soup. It made the soup looked cloudy. I need more practice on how to get good rice crepes.

We had char siew rice for dinner on Sunday. I obtained this char siew recipe from Lily. It was a great try. For the rice, I used a packet of hainanese chicken rice paste and mixed them together. There was no sauce to pour on top of the char siew because the sauce was burnt to charcoal when I baked it. Maybe the temperature was set too high. Anyway, I need more practice on both dishes. Practice makes perfect ;)

We went for a dinner at one of the top indian restaurants called Kayal Restaurant. It was our first visit there. This restaurants has won many awards. You can search their website to find out more: here. We had:

Our starters: huge masala dosa and yummy lamb Adipoli Aadu/Kozhi (do you think the plate looks like a paint palette?!!)

Breads: Appam (I like this!)

Main course: Mixed vegetables stew (err... not too bad but I prefer Gourmet Raj Chilli vegetable labra) and lastly, Kayal fish curry (couldn't see any fish from the pic - i ate 2.5 pieces and he ate another 2.5). Overall, it is a great place with quality food and friendly staff.

I wanted to try something new. So, instead of usual yong chow fried rice, I tried to cook this nasi pattaya (omelette fried rice). I was trying to impress him with some deco on the egg but he said it looked 'scary'... !%^&*@~*^

Last night we had this lo mai kai for dinner. It was really nice especially with lots of pepper on it. I got the recipe from here. I just used chicken without the char siew and chinese sausage. Give it a try!!

Easy Chocolate Biscuits

This recipe is very easy. U just need a few ingredients to make them into a very nice and lovely biscuilt.

Ingredients:

150g malted biscuits (blended)
80-100g butter (melted)
250g cooking chocolate (melted)
some chopped nuts

Method:

1. Mix the blended biscuits with melted butter evenly. Make them into small ball and put them in the small cupcake cases. Chill in the fridge for at least an hour till the biscuits are firm.
2. Melt the cooking chocolate and pour it on top of the biscuits till it covers the whole biscuilts.
3. Sprinkle some chopped nuts on top of the biscuits.
4. Chill the biscuits again for at least an hour till they are set.

Method:

1. Soak the raw cashew nuts for about 10 mins.

2. Preheat the oven 175 degree.

3. Spread the cashew nuts on the baking tray and roast them till golden brown.

4. While still hot, add in some butter and salt and mix well.

5. Let them cool. Then dust the cashew nuts with some icing sugar.

Chocolate swiss roll with black cherry filling

I made this swiss roll yesterday and it was nice. But I still don't know how to roll it into perfect round shape. I need to figure it out. Can anyone help me?

Here is the recipe:

Ingredients:

5 medium size eggs
80g caster sugar (divide equally into 2 portions)
50g plain flour
50g cornflour
35g olive oil
1 tbsp cocoa powder
1 tsp instant coffee powder
1 1/2 tbsp of hot water
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp cream of tartar

Filling:
1 can of Nestle Tip Top squirty cream
1 can of Hartley's black cherry

Method:
1. Preheat oven 175 degree. Grease and line the tray with a greaseproof paper.
2. Mix cocoa powder and instant coffee powder with hot water. Set aside.
3. Sift together plain flour, cornflour and baking powder for 2 -3 times. Set aside.
4. Separate the egg whites and egg yolks. Whisk the egg whites and cream of tartar until foamy. Add in 40g caster sugar gradually, spoonful by spoonful. Whisk till fluffy. (make sure the egg white doesn't fall out when you turn the bowl over)
5. In another mixing bowl, hand whisk the egg yolks with another 40g caster sugar. Add in olive oil. Put in flour gradually and mix well.
6. Fold in 1/3 of egg whites into egg yolks mixture lightly and gently. Repeat the rest. Lastly add in the cocoa mixture and mix well.
7. Pour the batter into baking tray and bake it at 175 degree for 15 mins.
8. Remove from oven and peel off the greaseproof paper. Leave it to cool on the rack.
9. Spread enough cream on 3/4 surface. Then top with some black cherry and roll it up.
10. Wrap it in a cling wrap and chill it in the fridge before serving.

Dinner (A):
We had Sarawak laksa for dinner two days ago. This laksa paste was quite nice altho I didn't have belacan(shrimp paste) to add in.

Clockwise: Mee hoon, bean sprouts, prawns, scallions, chilli prawn crisps with lime, eggs and shredded chicken.

Dinner (B):
A simple dish - char kueh teow with garlic, bean sprouts, eggs and scallions. I also made some chilli sauce to go with it. Not to forget the nice milk tea too. My friend said that this dish is just like what we usually have at the coffeeshop back home.

Dinner (B):
We had steamboat for dinner. I made some potstickers to go with the steamboat. Hmm.. not too bad :) At first I was thinking of making tom yum soup but my hubby was not really keen about it so I made some chicken soup instead.

The scarf in progress that was shown in previous blog turned out to be this. I changed the pattern to the lace type which I think is nicer (hopefully it is).

This is my first time knitting a pair a socks. It is kind of too thick to go with the shoes. Maybe just wear it at home.

The socks suit both our feet. Guess whose feet are they? ;p

My next project runway is a pair of gloves.. but stuck half way and don't know to progress on. Still trying to figure out how to knit the fingers...

This was my second attempt of making steamed pau. It turned out quite nice especially the skin because I used the pau flour that I bought from an asian store rather than the plain white flour. I cheated on the fillings as I used ready made kaya and chocolate. This time I used the steamer that my best friend gave me. It is really easy to use and save time too. Altogether, I made 12 small buns with this 250g pau flour.

I cooked some chicken soup these few days. It is because my fiance is going to sit for his exam. I added some ginseng into it too. And yesterday he told me that he didnt want to drink it anymore because he has consumed it for 3 days in a row. He couldn't stand the bitter taste of the ginseng. Haiz.. Got ginseng chicken soup to drink and yet still like to complain.. ;)

A story of a box of instant cake mix

I went for groceries shopping at Everwin yesterday with my 3+ years old niece. As usual, I put her inside the trolley and push her around. When we passed by the baking and confectionary section, my niece saw a beautiful cake box and she put it inside the trolley.

Val: Gugu, I want this.

Me: This is not a ready made cake. We go and buy ready made one.

Val: Don’t want. I want this.

She put the box into the trolley. I pushed her to another section and showed her the ready made cakes like Apollo layer cake.

Me: Gugu buy this for val, ok? This is ready made one.

Val: Don’t want. This is nicer. (although she hasn’t try it before.. maybe because the picture of the cake attracted her)

At the end, we bought this instant cake mix. I couldn’t persuade her to change her mind.

At home, my mum asked me why I bought this instant cake mix.

Mum: Why do u buy this instant cake mix?

Me: Val wants it.

Mum: Maybe she thought it’s a ready made cake.

So, I opened the box and showed my niece that there was no cake inside the box except the flour and batter.

Me: U see, Val… There is no cake inside. Only got these (I showed her the flour and batter)

Val: (without hesitation) Gugu makes the cake lo.

Even small kid knows that it’s a instant cake mix. Never thought that small kids don’t know anything. Kids are smarter nowadays. So, last night I baked the cake for her. This is my first time trying out this instant cake mix. It turned out fine – soft and fluffy but a bit too sweet for me. I got add extra coffee + milo to make it look like a marble cake.

Tonight was my first attempt of making mantou. They turned out to be not too bad. I added some pandan paste and coffee emulco into the plain mantou to make them more attractive and mouth-watering (do you think so? :p)

Ingredients: Pau flour, instant yeast, sugar, shortening, pandan paste and chocolate emulco

I've been unemployed for months already. It's kind of bored after such a long holiday. Initially with no doubt, it's wonderful to have such a long holiday but after sometimes then u will feel bored. To burn my boredom, I've started to learn knitting. Knitting is different from crochetting. Knitting uses both hands while crocheting uses one hand only. It's fun to know how to knit and crochet. Here are some of my projects. There are still more to come.. ;)

Thieves are everywhere nowadays. My house was their target early this morning. They came in through the side windows. They took down the window glass and the grills and put them nicely aside. The most important thing was they took away our sony bravia tv... uuhhhhhhh... and some cash too.. But thanks God, we were not harm.

It's 12.45pm here and it's so quite out there. No sound of car or people walking around. No white christmas this year. I've been here for almost a month and only snowed once early in the morning but just for a while. The floor was not even covered with tiny bit of snow. I will have xmas potluck dinner tonight. My best friend and her hubby will drive all the way from her place to my place which will take up around 2 hours plus. They gonna stay overnight here and i'm sure we gonna stay up late and have a long chat tonight.
I've prepared some dishes for tonight - rendang, five spices pork with mantou, sweet and sour soup and mixed vege. While my friend will cook chicken curry and fried noodles. I will try to post the pictures of food later tonight.

My mum invited a priest over to our place for a thanksgiving mass yesterday. We wanted to thank God for all the blessings that he has showered us throughout the year and may He continues to bless us and guide us throughout our life. We prepared some food for our invited guests, mostly were choir members and a few from BEC. My mum was the chef while I was just a kitchen helper. So after the mass, all of us enjoyed the food together.

Egg Tart of a day.. Thinking of making egg tart this morning while doing some groceries shopping today.

BEFORE

They are ermm... nice.. Let me share with u the recipe of egg tart.

Sugar dough:
375g flour
2tbsp milk powder
90g castor sugar
250g butter
1 egg

Syrup:
100g sugar
240ml water

Filling:
3 eggs
320g syrup
40g evaporated milk
Few drops of vanilla essence (optional)

Method:
1. Sugar dough
Sift flour and milk powder together, rub in butter and castor sugar. Add in egg to form a dough. Refrigerate for half and hour.

2. Syrup
Cook sugar and water until boiling and let cool.

3. Filling
Beat eggs lightly, mix with remaining ingredients. Through sieve, keep aside.

4. Roll out sugar dough and line onto tart cases. Pour in filling. Bake at preheated oven at 180 degree celsius for 20-25 minutes or until the filling is firm.

Hmm.. yum yum..

So, today my student brought some cakes and biscuits for us to try out. We did make some orders from her and most probably will get our orders few days before cny. UCS Educational Visit to Batang Ai and Kuching

We brought 31 students to Batang Ai on 28th July and to Kuching on the next day. On the first day we visited Batang Air Sarawak Energy. Later at night, we'd a barbecue. As most of the students were male so food was kind of not really that enough. There was no where we could buy any food there especially at the place where we stayed. On the next day, we went to Kuching and stayed at a motel which was located somewhere in the town area.

On the first day at kuching we visited RTM. We had an opportunity to meet the DJs. After RTM, we went to The Spring and The Bourlevard. They are newly built shopping complexes. But to our dissapointment, the shopping complexes are not what we expected them to be. They are kind of empty inside.

On the next day, we went to UCS kuching branch called IE, located somewhere at Crowne Tower. Later in the afternoon, we went to XFab (used to be First Silicon but taken over by XFab). We came back home on 31st July morning, exhausted but still need to go to work. Last but not least, we did have lots of fun. You can browse through the pictures and see how happy and excited the students were. Enjoy yea...

It has been almost 2 months since my last post. I'm not really sure what I'm busy with. New semester started 2 weeks ago. So now we are in our 3rd weeks. Thought i could slow down a bit after some busy weeks but yet i can't. Another big task just fell on my head recently and I haven't plan how to do it yet and still under construction. Luckily before this new semester started, I'd a wonderful 2 weeks off to some places where my accomodation and food were fully sponsored. Hopefully everything flows smoothly this semester. Actually I didn't have any intention to make cookies for cny this year. However, didn't know why this cornflakes cookies suddenly got into my mind yesterday afternoon after chatting with my friend. So straight after work yesterday, I went to buy the ingredients. I started to make them after my dinner and finished baking in less than 2 hours. I gave away some to my cousins. Chinese New Year is around the corner. Have you bought anything for CNY yet such as food, mandarin oranges, clothes and etc? How about your spring cleaning? I found it quite hard to find a nice piece of clothes as the fashion nowadays is too trendy for my liking. So I think I'd go for a pair a jeans and T-shirt for this coming CNY. For the cakes.. Hmm.. still thinking what cakes to bake - Coffee cake, Horlick Cake, Cheesecake, Kaya Cake and etc. It seems like every year we are making the same cakes. Any recommendations? Please recommend something affordable due to economic crisis. What to do?? Everything Naik Harga.. Take for example, Golden Churn butter, it used to cost RM3.85 per bar and now it costs RM6.30 per bar. Anyway, life still goes on.

Stomach pain

I've been unwell lately. It started during my two weeks holiday. I went to see the doctors for three times already. There is excessive acid in my stomach. I thought it was cause by the apple cider vinegar that I drank few weeks back. But I was wrong. The doctor said that the apple cider vinegar was not the cause of it because it becomes alkaline when it reaches our stomach. The main cause was because of irregular meals pattern. When I eat. I eat a lot. When I don't eat then I don't eat. So gals, please eat regular meals everyday. Don't skip breakfast or lunch and then eat a lot for dinner. It's not good for long term. Take care. Today as usual I went to the church with my family early in the morning. I remembered vividly that the Father mentioned today that we should wish each other "Holy Christmas" rather than "Merry Christmas". What is the true meaning for us to celebrate Christmas? Today is my first day of holiday. Actually yesterday I was given a day off due to flooding. Flood is everywhere around Sibu. A stock clerk was sent to clean up a storeroom in Maui , Hawaii ..

When he got back, he was complaining that the storeroom was really filthy and that he had noticed dried mouse/rat droppings in some areas. A couple of days later, he started to feel like he was coming down with a stomach flu, complained of sore joints and headaches, and began to vomit.

He went to bed and never really got up again. Within two days he was severely ill and weak. His blood sugar count was down to 66, and his face and eyeballs were yellow. He was rushed to the emergency at Pali-Momi, where he was diagnosed to be suffering from massive organ failure. He died shortly before midnight . No one would have made the connection between his job and his death, had it not been for a doctor who specifically asked if he had been in a warehouse or exposed to dried rat/mouse droppings at any time. They said there is a virus (much like the Hanta virus) that lives in dried rat and mouse droppings.

Once dried, these droppings are like dust and can easily be breathed in or ingested if a person does not wear protective gear or fails to wash face and hands thoroughly .

An autopsy was performed on the clerk to verify the doctor's suspicions.

This is why it is extremely important to ALWAYS carefully rinse off the tops of canned sodas or foods, and to wipe off pasta packaging, cereal boxes, and so on.

Almost everything you buy in a supermarket was stored in a warehouse at one time or another, and stores themselves often have rodents.

Most of us remember to wash vegetables and fruits but never think of boxes and cans.

The ugly truth is, even the most modern, upper-class, super store has rats and mice. And their warehouse most assuredly does!

Whenever you buy any canned soft drink, please make sure that you wash the top with running water and soap or, if that is not available, drink with a straw.

The investigation of soda cans by the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta discovered that the tops of soda cans can be encrusted with! dried rat's urine, which is so toxic it can be lethal. Canned drinks and other foodstuffs are stored in warehouses and containers that are usually infested with rodents, and then they get transported to retail outlets without being properly cleaned.

Please take note of this. Save our families, relatives, friends and all the people around the world.

Just wonder how many of us are satisfied with our current jobs. As far as I know, most people aren't really satisfied with theirs. Why? Is it because of salaries or bosses or colleagues or etc.? Is it so hard to satisfy with what we have so far? As long as we do our parts and get our monthly salaries then we should be proud of ourselves. But things turn out to be not so easy as I thought it was... :(

This is my first time writing a blog. I'm just a simple girl who likes to eat yoghurt pudding... ;) Right now, my mind is blank and I can't think of any interesting topics to write.
